Until I was 50, tried to do it myself because wasn't admitting it was to hard was some kind of failure. Then it got too hard and I had no choice. Turning to (prescribed) drugs made it esier to get ahead of the depression. Then when I was more put together I had a lot more success in fighting it off. The final stage has been to minimize the drugs required for me NOT to start down the spiral. Life is so much nicer when the sun comes out more, people smile more, and my problems are not all life threatening :)
Now at 70 my life is more serene, not so many problems seem to come my way, an my relationship are more loving. (Why could I not understand sooner that I did not have to do it alone :)

I don’t think the depression, mood swings and anxiety (among other things) are the result of Bi-Polar, but symptoms of another condition, which can be explained by most of those drugs, Gary found at Jessie’s flat. “Serophone” is not something I’ve stumbled across, during my research, but I did come across a drug called Serophene - though, I doubt that Jessie was trying to conceive again! The Metformin was the one that really caught my eye. Typically, it’s used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, but it can also be prescribed to women with PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome - the symptoms of which are mood swings, depression and anxiety, among others - along with Folic Acid.
Of course, it’s probable that I’m wrong - but, I’m not going to peek at the “other place”, to see if I was right or not! I’m content to wait until Chapter 9 and find out, like everyone else :-)

I practiced medicine for many years and have a psychiatrist and a psychologist as two of my five children. I wish that the help these two people received reflected the real world of mental health treatment. Quality mental health diagnosis and treatment in the USA is really only available for the rich. What the unwealthy receive is poor diagnosis, and drugs, either prescribed or acquired on the street. And even with wealth available to pay for care, the results shown in this story are rarely achieved. Well written story. -4-
