HDL, this was certainly a novel addition to the George Anderson FS mythos. It was in no way a story but your interpretation (and your wife's input) which could possibly explain away Linda's decision to fuck Marc. Interesting that in order for her to be justified in your eyes, you completely trashed GA's characterisation of Jim as deserving of a cheating wife. So Linda becomes the scorned alpha female and Jim becomes the villain of the piece. Ok to a point, but that's reality as you (and your wife) see it working out in the real world. Shit man, the reason you liked his original submission was how it made you identify with Jim's pain of humiliation and betrayal. So, you simply used GA's characters and tweaked the plot to justify your own perspective. An interesting exercise that falls a little short of being genuinely creative.

I took this version as somewhat of a parody addition to the FebSux multiverse, a fictional explanation focusing on a fictional view of a fictional tale that changes many of the elements of the original classic story, which is fiction.
The key is that it's all fiction.
That's the point... it's another view of a story that hit so many different people in so many ways that it is a classic STORY on LW.
No one can claim their version is more correct than anyone else's.
George Anderson wrote a story that was so intriguing, and invited the world to write their own versions and endings that many did, making this one of the most read and most rewritten or added to on Lit, in more categories than just the original post on LW.
Many were good, some were great, others not...
...but no one can argue that the story was a classic., or that theirs is the 'right' one.
The question is whether the other versions were entertaining or not, and this one was, in a different way than the others...

I get it dude. There’s also a running theme in this category where the headstrong or, as you put it, alpha female, fucks up (on purpose) and then cries and snivels all day and night to the person she hurt. That doesn’t jive with real life. When I caught my first wife cheating in a very public way (the Christian receptionist at her chiropractor called me directly to give me, and several other husbands, the bad news) I confronted her right away. She smirked slightly and said, “yeah, I really don’t want to be married anymore.” That would have been a good thing to say before we had two kids together. My point is, while that’s more in line with what a woman in today’s world might say, it doesn’t make for a very good erotic story. In my works, I try to temper that alpha female mentality with a small degree of remorse. After all, I have a true loving wife like you do, and she constantly calls bullshit on my characters when they suddenly go from brutal to mousy.
As far as the story itself, this would have been great in “reviews and essays”, not so much in LW.

This just comes across to me as someone trying to make sense of nonsense (the original story) by essentially disregarding the original story entirely. Okay, fine - here's a list of other things that could have been real
- Linda had a brain tumor.
- Linda is a sociopath that has been low key abusing Jim for years and keeping him in line through manipulation
- Linda had seen Jim's browser history and thought that not only would he be okay with this, but he'd get off on it
- Linda is being blackmailed to do this otherwise everyone she knows gets a video of that time when her and Jim were on vacation in Mexico and she lost a few hours at the donkey show.
I mean, really - the OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS. However, I'm not sure what makes your version more real than any of the bupkiss that I just wrote down.
Personally I feel like George's story is just dumb. Linda doesn't have a credible motive for what she did because George wanted them to get back together at the end without making either of them the bad guy when clearly, one of them HAD to be. He did the literary equivalent of writing a check with his mouth that his ass couldn't cash. That's why people rewrite this story so much - not because it's good, but because it's fucking terrible. Hell, it's probably why you rewrote it as well. Because it's a unique blend of emotional terrorism and nonsense.
It feels like the last few things you've written have been tormented by GA's feces encrusted masterpiece. I'll admit that the first one made me laugh a lot, so thanks for that, but man... stop trying to make the insane, sane. That almost always ends up like an H.P. Lovecraft story.

I think the 3 sections story, Jim and Linda could have been filled out a little more but you are spot on story and Jim but I think you fall a little short on Linda. Possibly one reason is the marriage is dead but there are typically several others and at times all of them mix together such as : she is a romantic , she is submissive to friends influence , she sees bragging rights , ego driven to be selected , she wants an open marriage , she is into porn etc. in addition to the marriage is dead because of his lack of interest
The one section missing in your story is Aftermath. The majority of women do understand that divorce is highly likely but that they can talk themselves back into it or sleep there way back in. What they fail to realize is the self worth and ego of a man is something they don’t understand or they have understood it in a womanly way which doesn’t do them justice. Most men fall into that category whether they divorce or reconcile or whatever. But clearly this paragraph would be wide ranging since each couple would be different in the handling of their Aftermath. But one common thread for all of them would emphasize fidelity , trust , communication and a change in the dynamics of marriage for them whether they reconcile or move on.
All of what you wrote I have pondered plus what I have wrote yet it barely scratches the surface. Thus this GA story is one of the greatest for stirring up emotions and thoughts.

The problem with your story and hypothesis is that it fundamentally changes the original story. While your version would allow the cheating, it so would the same story if the husband were say, a serial killer and the wife found out. Or perhaps the husband was cheating first. Or perhaps the wife found out the husband no longer loved her. Or perhaps she was being blackmailed. Or perhaps...
You see the point (hopefully). Any reasoning can be made more likely by rewriting the story, but than you are telling a different story. You don't think the original is likely to happen. That's fine. Suggesting a dead marriage to explain a characters actions is also fine. It is not the original story nor is it close to the original story nor are the characters like the original characters so the entire plot is also different.
But you go with your bad self. I wonder how many stories your story will spawn from other writers?
Oh, as an aside, Romeo and Juliet wasn't very realistic. Neither was Jane Eyre. Hmm, now that I think about it, Gone Girl with wasn't realistic either (hmm, wait a sec).
We write about the 5% (which is actually inaccurately small) because that 5% makes for a good story. Good women and good men that have nothing wrong with them and with nothing happening to them make for boring storytelling that evoke nothing in the reader (see Joseph Campbell's hero with a thousand faces for what is need to make a story work).
Your choice is to simply change the villain from an arrogant narcissistic wife to a neglectful uncaring husband. Both fall into the 5% category you mentioned, you just seem more comfortable with the husband as the villain, covering your preference with a call for realism. Realism would dictate that your story never took place, that they divorced quietly after discussions broke down and they both realized they didn't want to be married.
Wow, realistic but quite boring. Sorry to disagree with you but your reasoning, while it may be more realistic (I don't agree but lets give it to you) makes for a story that is less in almost every way.

Hayden, I am not a troll. I too liked George's story (hell, I even wrote my ault ending), but that is where we would fundamentally disagree. George's story was written from Jim's prospective, your view of what Linda was thinking would be bull shit, unless you wished to write the story from her stand point (and a few have).
I agree that the conversation at the beginning of story was believable and I could agree with you analysis, but that is where you fell out of Kamala's coconut tree. According to George's story, Jim gave Linda all of the attention she wanted up until that night. The four other couples were Linda's friends and his by association.
Linda was a bitch, but if she was the bitch you described, there marriage was over long before LaVarllier entered the scene. The true problem with George's story was Linda's lack of remorse after the fact, and the Ellen set-up. The original cut Jim's balls off and let Linda keep them in a jar to remind him of who was in charge. The sad state of the world is, 'Is it cheaper to keep her' rules the world.

Most neglected women living in profound marital disconnect simply resign themselves slowly and detach emotionally. If one day they happen to connect with another, the emotional transfer occurs.
Some of that may result in physical cheating (for the weaker ones), some may result in what the husband would interpret as inexplicable Walk Away Wife syndrome; and in some cases, the husband is openly informed, long before cheating, that she will have no choice but leave after years of trying.
They say women get over a divorce easier than men because they have had a long time to mourn the loss of the relationship.
Cases of chronic disconnect typically come from poor matching: if he constantly drifts off to TV/football buddies and she needs meaningful conversation and interaction, it's simply a poor match. That's all.
Poor matches are the most potent relationship carcinogenic.

Marriages can go on for decades after beginning descent in year 1, since people don't act in a vacuum of constraints, time and timing, viable alternatives, consequences of the mate selection mistake, etc.
As traditionally advised, many inadequately matched couples try to make it work in good faith for years, at which point the sunken costs have already snowballed, with children in the picture; so they double down some more, especially in the absence of compelling alternatives.
As children approach adulthood, the couple's reality resurfaces.
Reality is adaptive, not moralistic.
